Center for Writing & Learning
The Center for Writing and Learning (CWL) exists to help raise the level of academic achievement at Fresno Pacific University, offering a variety of services to meet the various needs of our learning community. All of our consultants are professionally trained to work with the unique needs and talents found here at FPU, and to help students develop the knowledge and skills needed to become confident, independent and active learners, who in turn can help strengthen the learning community. Underlying our services is the belief that students working with students is beneficial for everyone involved in the learning process, regardless of academic abilities.
- Tutoring
- One-on-one tutoring is available to students for writing assignments across all disciplines, as well as for help with general education subjects. Sessions are 20-40 minutes long, and are available by appointment and through drop-in service.
- Writing
- Tutors will work with students as many times as needed, in all stages of the writing process, to help with development, organization and clarity. Please note that though we may offer help with grammatical issues, CWL does not provide guaranteed proofreading services.
- General Education Subjects
- Tutoring is available for math, accounting, economics and Spanish, and emphasizes collaborative and alternative methods of learning to help process classroom lectures and activities, as well as homework assignments. Tutoring may also be available for other classes; students are encouraged to inquire about specific needs.
- Academic Workshops
- CWL provides one-time, hour-long workshops that address a wide variety of topics and skills for student success. Examples include: note-taking skills, test- taking strategies, time management and learning styles.
- Academic Study Hall
- Academic Study Hall supports the Athletic Department’s desire to ensure the success of student-athletes by providing space and accountability for completing assignments. Though the study hall is intended to meet specific needs of athletes, it is available to all students.
- Academic Coaching
- Academic coaching provides students with a one-on-one, ongoing relationship through which guidance, accountability, feedback and encouragement are offered to help achieve higher levels of academic performance.
- Supplemental Instruction
- Supplemental instruction is offered alongside course instruction. Regularly scheduled study sessions are led by high-performing students, each trained to provide a collaborative experience that integrates a review of course content with the development of study skills.
While graduate and degree completion students may seek help from the Center for Writing and Learning, services are primarily offered to traditional undergraduate students, and only on the main campus.
