NAIA National Championship - Quarterfinal

Canaday leads FPU to 3-0 sweep of Texas-Brownsville

Box score (30-17, 30-24, 30-21)

Columbia, Missouri - Marin (Shilling) Canaday was almost perfect. The senior middle blocker from Clovis, California, pounded 16 kills to lead the Sunbirds to a 30-17, 30-24, 30-21 sweep of the University of Texas at Brownsville Scorpions in a NAIA National quarterfinal match this afternoon in Columbia, Missouri.

The win propels the Sunbirds into tomorrow's semifinals.

Canaday, who made no errors on 20 swings, hit .800 for the match and also was in on five blocks. Younger sister Lisa Shilling led the FPU with seven blocks. Canaday also had help from Fabiana Leomil and Thais Julio, both with 10 kills. Brittany Pierce added nine kills and hit .409 for the match.

FPU setter Shu Liu dished 46 assists, had five kills, five digs and was in on four blocks. Libero Tiffany Marinos led all players with 10 digs.

Talita Milasauskas led the Scorpions with 14 kills and five blocks. The loss ended the Scorpions season at 35-9.

FPU's semifinal opponent is a familiar one, the Biola University Eagles. The Eagles are the only team to win a win over the Sunbirds. That came on Halloween evening, October 31, when the Eagles used the friendly confines of Chase Gymnasium to out-last the Sunbirds 29-31, 30-19, 30-28, 28-30, 15-13 in a five-game thriller.

Biola eliminated 2006 champion National American of South Dakota 27-30, 30-24, 30-22, 30-27, to earn the right to face the Sunbirds.

Game-time is 9:30 a.m. Central Time and 7:30 Pacific Time. The match is available from the NAIA on a pay-per-view basis. The link is listed below.
