Wang delivers in victory over #24 Wesminster

Irvine, Calif.- In their second contest of the day the Sunbirds collected another dominating win over their third ranked opponent this year. The #24 ranked Griffins of Westminster College were the third straight ranked opponent to be swept 3-0 by the Sunbirds.

K e Ke Wang led the Sunbirds with a 12 kills and three solo blocks. Fabiana Leomil added six kills, while Shu Liu accumulated 33 assist.

An all around performance by the Sunbirds in set one set the tone early. Offensively they recorded a .500 hitting percentage as they kept the Griffins to a -.136 in route to a 25-9 win.

Not much would change in set two as the Sunbirds continued their dominant ways. Another defensive showcase that kept the Griffins hitting percentage in the negatives, -.034 percent, propelled the Sunbirds to a 25-11 win.

The Sunbirds faced a bit of a challenge in set three, but once again relied on tough defense to complete the sweep. Even though the offense startled, the Sunbirds connected on 14 kills and held the Griffins to four in the 25-19 win.

With the win the Sunbirds improve to 8-0. They will be back in action this Wednesday, September 3rd, as they take on cross town rival Fresno State. First serve is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start.

Leomil and Wang lead Sunbirds over #11 Georgetown

Costa Mesa, Calif.- The Sunbirds passed another test as they beat #11 ranked Georgetown (Kentucky) in their second match of the day. A quick 3-0 victory saw another stellar defensive performance that kept Georgetown at a low .071 hitting percentage. Fabiana Leomil and K eke Wang did most the damage as they collected a combined 19 kills.

In the opening set, the Sunbirds pulled away early. After being knotted at one apiece the Sunbirds stormed out to a 20-9 lead. They would continue to roll for the 25-14 win. Set one was their best offensively as they hit a spectacular .529 percentage.

Set number two was a closer battle but momentum would switch have way through the set. Georgetown took advantage of a slight offensive struggle for the Sunbirds to keep the game knotted at 15-15.

With the set tied at 15 the Sunbirds put together an impressive 10-2 run to close the set for the 25-17 win.


The Sunbirds jumped back on track offensively to complete the sweep. They hit a respectable .379 and kept the clamps on Georgetown for a .000 hitting percentage. The third set was another unbalanced contest in favor of the Sunbirds as they stormed to a 10-4 lead in route to the 25-15 win.

Play will continue tomorrow as the Sunbirds take on Savannah College of Art & Design at 12:00 pm and then they will finish up with Westminster at 5:00 pm. With the win they improve to 6-0 overall.

Sunbirds storm pass first opponent in the Concordia Labor Day Festival

Irvine, Calif.- A strong and consistent attack allowed the Sunbirds to breeze Saint Mary's of Nebraska in the opening round of the Concordia Labor Day Festival. KeKe Wang's all around performance, which included a .667 hitting percentage (9 for 13) along with five service aces, paced the Sunbirds to the 3-0 win.

 

Set one saw both teams trade points early but an eight to four run by the Sunbirds started to create some cushion. Three perfect assist by senior Tarin Tartaglia ignited the run that forced an early time out by Saint Mary's. The Sunbirds continued to dominate as they went on to hit a scorching .571 % in route to the 25-12 win

 

Wang's performance started off with four straight service aces in the middle part of the second set. She would also add three kills.

 

Another team performance that accumulated a .429 hitting percentage as they kept Saint Mary's at a .083 percent allowed the Sunbirds to take the second set 25-10.

 

As the defensive continued to get stronger so did the Sunbirds. in the final set, the Sunbirds forced Saint Mary's into a -.045 hitting percentage in route to the 25-13 win. They were also strong on the offensive end hitting .444 for the final set.

 

The Sunbirds will be back in action this evening as they take on #11 ranked Georgetown (Kentucky) at 5:00 pm. The win improves the Sunbirds to 5-0.
