FPU at the NAIA National Indoor Championship

Friesen, McAmis earn All-America honors; Nelson 8th, Geortzen 9th

Johnson City, Tennessee - Natalie Friesen and Molly McAmis earned All-America honors on the final day of competition at the 2007 NAIA National Indoor Track & Field Championship in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Friesen, a junior from Reedley (Immanuel HS) finished fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 39-05.75.

McAmis, a senior form Santa Maria (Ernest Righetti HS) unleashed a personal-best 45-10.75 in the shot put to finish in fifth place. McAmis previous best was a 44-02 effort at the 2005 NAIA National Outdoor Championship in Louisville, Kentucky.

It was the sixth NAIA All-America recognition for Friesen and third for McAmis.

Dia Mathews (Fresno, Fresno CC) and Karley Kalinich (Victorville, CSU Northridge) also competed in the shot put. Mathews, who qualified for the championship with the sixth-best mark (45-05.35), fouled on her first attempt, issued a 39-08.75 safety on her second and fouled her third. She finished a disappointing 21st. Kalinich who qualified 28th (40-03.25) and Azusa Pacific's Ruth Wilhelm were the only two competitors to not register a fair throw.

Junior high jumper Britni Geortzen (Reedley, Reedley HS) cleared 5-03.00 on her first attempt, but missed all three attempts at 5-05.00. She finished in ninth place tied with three other competitors.

Sophomore distance specialist Ashley Nelson (Clovis, Clovis East HS) finished seventh in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:22.87. Her performance earned her All-America honorable mention status.

Oklahoma Baptist narrowly won the team competition with 52 and one-third points. Wayland Baptist was second with 51 points. Azusa Pacific was the top Golden State Athletic Conference finisher with 30 points in ninth place.

The six-member Sunbirds team finished with 12 points and tied with Aquinas College (Michigan) for 17th place. Other GSAC members included Concordia 14th (Tie - 15 points), Westmont 23rd (tie - 8 points); Vanguard 27th (7 points).

Friesen, Kalinich, Mathews earn All-America honors

Johnson City, Tennessee - It was an All-America kind of day for the FPU trio of Natalie Friesen (Reedley, Immanuel HS), Karley Kalinich (Victorville, CSU Northridge),  and Dia Mathews (Fresno, Fresno CC) Friday at the 2007 NAIA National Indoor Track & Field Championship in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Kalinich and Mathews earned their All-America recognition in the 20-pound weight throw with fourth and sixth place finishes, respectively. Friesen was sixth in the long jump.

Kalinich's toss of 55-10.25 broke her own FPU record of 55-01.50, set February 11, 2006. Mathews reached 53-00.25. Friesen notched another clutch performance with a leap of 18-05.25 on her final attempt to beat seventh-place finisher Ebony Phillips of Friends University (Kansas) by three-quarters of an inch.

It was the fifth NAIA All-America recognition for Friesen, the third for Kalinich and the second for Mathews.

All three will compete tomorrow; Kalinich and Mathews in the shot put and Friesen in the triple jump. Molly McAmis (Santa Maria, Ernest Righetti HS) will join Kalinich and Mathews in the shot put.

Also set to compete Saturday are Britni Geortzen (Reedley, Reedley HS) and Ashley Nelson (Clovis, Clovis East HS). Geortzen will compete in the high jump and Nelson will run the 5,000 meters. A preliminary 5,000 set for  today was cancelled.

The Sunbirds have six points and are tied for 14th place in the team competition. Competition concludes tomorrow.

FPU will send six to NAIA National Indoor Championship

Fresno - Six FPU student-athletes have qualified to compete in the 2007 NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championship in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Junior horizontal jump specialist Natalie Friesen (Reedley, Immanuel HS) will compete in both the long and triple jumps. Britni Geortzen, also a junior (Reedley, Reedley HS) will compete in the high jump. Seniors Karley Kalinich (Victorville, CSU Northridge), Dia Mathews (Fresno, Fresno CC) and Molly McAmis (Santa Maria, Ernest Righetti HS) will via for honors in the shot put. Kalinich and Mathews will also compete in the 20-pound weight throw. Sophomore Ashley Nelson (Clovis, Clovis East HS) will compete in the 5,000 meters.

Four of the six, Friesen, Kalinich, Mathews and McAmis are NAIA National Championship veterans with nine All-America honors among them. Friesen, Geortzen and Nelson are making their first appearances in NAIA National Championship competition.

Competition begins Thursday and concludes Saturday at the Memorial Center.
