Sunbirds repeat! Sweep Azusa 5-0 in championship

San Diego - The Sunbirds punched their tickets to Mobile, Alabama, this afternoon in San Diego with an easy 5-0 sweep of No. 6 Azusa Pacific in today's NAIA Region II championship.

The Sunbirds lost only four combined games in sweeping doubles play, then picked up wins at No. 1 singles from Jelena Pandzic (6-3, 6-0 over Jennifer Dao) and No. 3 Anna Karavayeva (6-2, 6-1 over Kim Tran).

"We played well today," said FPU head coach Neil Castro. "We were focused and dominant at times. This is the best we have played in a while. It is a good way to get ready for the National Championship."

With the win the Sunbirds claim the Regions automatic berth into the 24-team field. The Sunbirds, national runners-up last year in their inaugural season, are expected to be seeded second.

The official bracket for the championship will be released on Wednesday, May 9. Site of the 2007 championship is Mobile, Alabama.
