Sunday, April 29, 2007 - Ojai, Calif. Ojai - Top-seeded Jelena Pandzic's 6-3, 6-1 win over #4 Desiree Stone of UC Davis in the championship match of the Ojai Tournament was not only a repeat, it gave the Sunbirds the team trophy for the second consecutive year. That FPU's doubles team of Anna Karavayeva & Audrey Laib defeated Anita Athavale & Emma Shapiro (6-2, 6-4), also from UC Davis, was icing on the cake. Pandzic and the Sunbirds now turn their attention to the NAIA Region 2 Championship in San Diego May 3-4. The Sunbirds (20-1) are the top seed and will face No. 4-seeded Point Loma Nazarene (13-6) on Thursday. No. 3 Vanguard (18-2)) and No. 3 Azusa Pacific (15-3) will face off in the other semifinal. The championship is set for Friday. The Region Champion earns an automatic berth into the NAIA National Championship which will be held in Mobile, Alabama, May 14-18.
Ojai - Fresno Pacific will be well represented in tomorrow's championship finals at the Ojai Tennis Tournament in Ojai. Top-seeded Jelena Pandzic defeated teammate Audrey Laib 6-3, 6-4 in today's semifinals to advance to tomorrow's championship. She will face fourth-seeded Desiree Stone of UC Davis. FPU's doubles team of Anna Karavayeva & Audrey Laib defeated #third-seeded Jenna Kappel & Herzyl Legaspi of UC Davis 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the championship tomorrow. They will face Anita Athavale & Emma Shapiro also from UC Davis. Pandzic is the defending singles champion and the Sunbirds are the defending team champion. The lead UC Davis by one point in the team competition. The Sunbirds need a win by either Pandzic in the singles or Karavayeva in Laib in doubles to repeat as team champions. |
