Sunbirds romp over No. 6 Azusa Pacific 7-2

Fresno - Jelena Pandzic got the Sunbirds off to a great start this afternoon at the Haak Tennis Complex and the Sunbirds never looked back in a 7-2 romp over No. 6 Azusa Pacific.

Pandzic defeated Jennifer Dao 6-0, 6-0 and set the tone for the afternoon. It was her fifth win over Dao in as many outings. Angelina Minova, Anna Karavayeva and Audrey Laib followed suite, also winning in straight sets.

Minova defeated Bay Daniels (6-3, 6-1), while Karavayeva beat Kim Tran (6-1, 6-2) and Laid shut-down Peggy Bell (6-3, 6-3). Megan Hanner needed three sets to finish Jessalyn Lau.

FPU's only singles glitch of the day came at the number 5 spot where Amandine Ferot  lost in three sets to APU's Katy Jelsma. Ferot won the first set 6-2 and was up 5-2 in the second, but Jelsma stormed back to win it 7-6. Ferot was up 5-1 in the third set, but again could not close as Jelsma won it 7-6.

Jeslma, together with partner Lindsy Cloniger, also got the best of Ferot doubles play. Jeslma and Cloniger defeated Ferot and Hanner 8-6.

"Anytime you can pick up a win from a top-10 team, it's a good day," said FPU head coach Neil Castro. "We had a couple trouble spots, but we'll work through that."

FPU improves to 6-0 overall, and 2-0 in GSAC play, with the win. They will continue GSAC play on Wednesday in Fullerton against Hope International and Thursday in Costa Mesa against Vanguard.

On Tuesday, February 27, the Sunbirds will take a break from GSAC play, to face NCAA Division I member Cal State Fullerton in Fullerton.

The Sunbirds return to the Haak Tennis Complex on Saturday, March 3, when they host the Biola in a GSAC match.
