Sunbirds claim GSAC title with 9-0 sweep

Haak Tennis Center

Fresno - The Sunbirds claimed their second consecutive Golden State Athletic Conference title with a 9-0 sweep of the No. 11 Point Loma Nazarene University Sea Lions.

In her final appearance at the Haak Tennis Center, senior Jelena Pandzic and partner Audrey Laib got the Sunbirds rolling with an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Their success carried over to singles play where they posted identical wins of 6-2, 6-1 over Ashley Strimple and Mara Petrini, respectively.

"I didn't think we played that well today," FPU head coach Neil Castro said. "But I am pleased that we repeated as GSAC champions. We have a lot of work to do to get ready for the Regional and National championships.

Pandzic, the reigning NAIA National Individual Champion, posted a perfect 17-0 singles and 16-0 doubles record over two seasons at the Haak Center.

Today's match was originally scheduled for February 10, but rained-out.

The Sunbirds will participate in the Ojai Tournament next week in preparation for the NAIA Region II championship May 3-4.
