Sunbirds sweep San Jose State 7-0 for second win

Fresno - A 90-minute rain delay did little to cool off Jelena Pandzic or her FPU teammates.

After drying the courts at the Haak Tennis Complex, Pandzic and company swept the visiting San Jose State Spartans 7-0.

Pandzic and partner Amandine Ferot may have taken awhile to get warmed up in doubles play (before pulling out a 9-7 win over Ashley Tavita and Amber Silverstone), but Pandzic made short work of Courtney Koenigsfeld (6-0, 6-0) in the No. 1 match.

FPU earned the doubles point when Karavayeva & Minova defeated Koenigsfeld & Rokie Larijani 8-3. Megan Hanner & Audrey Laib had few problems with Sanda Hadzisabic & Jennifer Williams in an 8-0 win.

Minova followed Pandzic's lead with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Amber Silverstone at No. 2. Karavayeva and Laib were not far behind with 6-0, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-2 wins, respectively.

Ferot split sets with Sanda Hadzisabic before winning 10-7 in a tie break. Hanner completed the sweep with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 6 against Dana Popescu.

"It is another good win," said head coach Neil Castro. "We struggled in a couple of places. Maybe we were a bit fatigued from Thursday, but I am pleased.

The win was not only FPU's second of the season, it was also their second win over an NCAA Divission I opponent. On Thursday the Sunbirds brushed aside Cal State Northridge (5-2).

The Sunbirds will have a week to prepare for their first Golden State Athletic Conference match. On Saturday, February 3, the Sunbirds will begin defense of the GSAC title in Santa Barbara, where they will face Westmont. Match-time is 12:30 PM.
