FPU men finish second 

Fresno - A freshman and a senior combined to lead the Sunbirds to a runner-up finish in the 2007 Golden State Athletic Conference Track & Field Championship. The event, hosted by the Sunbirds, concluded today.

Freshman Wes Wells won the high jump with a leap of 6-06.75 and senior Jeff Bogdanof unleashed a personal-best 14.73 to win the 110 meter high hurdles to lead FPU. It was the second title for Wells who won the long jump Friday.

Azusa Pacific won the two-day championship with 255 points. The Sunbirds men scored 162 points well ahead of third-place Point Loma Nazarene's 121. The effort earned FPU head coach Eric Schwab GSAC men's coach of the year honors. 

"We were a true team today," said Schwab. "Everybody worked hard. Everybody contributed and everybody benefited. I am real proud of this group, both men and women."

Fresno Pacific University will host the 2007 NAIA National Outdoor Track & Field Championship May 24-26.

Sunbirds host GSAC Track & Field Championship

Sunbirds tied for first after first day

Fresno - A sweep in the long jump lifted the Sunbirds to a first-place tie on the first day of the Golden State Athletic Conference Track and Field Championship.

Freshman Wes Wells won the long jump with a personal season-best of 22-05.25. Senior Nick Allen was an inch back (22-04.25) while T.J. Anderson finished third (21-11.00).

Other FPU highlights came from second place finishes from Benny Madrigal in the 3,000 meter Steeplechase (9:29.29) and Robert Hernandez in the 10,000 meters 932:31.85)last event of the day.

The Sunbirds scored a total of 57 points and are tied with Point Loma Nazarene for the lead. Defending champion Azusa Pacific is two back ar 55.

Decathlon and field events begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Track events begin at 1:30 p.m. with the 4x100 meter relay.


Wes Wells is the 2007 GSAC long jump champion.
